Sports Nutrition Product Development
Sports nutrition buyers read panels. Dose transparency is the category's main currency, which makes ingredient cost the central commercial constraint.
Dosing is the product
In most consumer categories, a panel is a formality. Here it's the pitch. Buyers compare amounts across brands, notice proprietary blends and price products per serving of active rather than per bottle. That means a formula has to be designed around what you can afford to dose honestly — which is an ingredient sourcing question as much as a formulation one.
Development considerations
- Amino systems — BCAA, EAA, citrulline, beta-alanine — and their heavy taste load
- Solubility limits, especially for poorly soluble performance inputs
- Pre-workout versus intra versus recovery, each a different formula
- Sweetener and acid systems that survive high active loading
- Liquid versus powder, decided by the dose you need to deliver
- Ingredient cost per serving against category price expectations
- Supplier documentation for brands pursuing third-party testing
Format decisions
High-dose products are difficult in ready-to-drink form: the actives that define the category are often at the edge of what a bottle can carry in solution. Powder formats allow honest dosing, which is why the category is powder-dominated — but RTD wins on convenience and retail presence for lower-dose positions. We size the format to the dose rather than forcing the dose into a preferred format.
Testing and certification
Brands targeting competitive athletes often need third-party tested or certified ingredients. That constrains supplier selection and raises cost, so it's decided during development rather than discovered after a formula is finished.
